Dental sealants consist of a thin layer of acrylic that is painted over the outer surfaces of a person’s back teeth. They establish an effective barrier against harmful bacteria and acids, thereby helping to prevent damage. This makes dental sealants a great treatment method for anyone with teeth that are at a high risk of developing cavities or decay.
Another benefit of dental sealants is that they smooth out the deep grooves and fissures that are commonly found on a person’s back teeth. Roughly 75 percent of all tooth decay exists within these areas. These spaces are known for being very difficult to clean, even when proper brushing and flossing techniques are used. By smoothing out these surfaces with dental sealants, these deep grooves and fissures can become significantly easier to maintain.
Children and teens are often great candidates for dental sealants since they are usually still developing the correct methods for brushing and flossing. Dental sealants are often ideal for baby teeth due to the fact that baby teeth tend to feature particularly deep grooves and fissures; however, many adults also receive dental sealants to protect their teeth and make cleaning easier.
The process of applying dental sealants is completed in just one visit to our practice and only requires a couple of minutes per tooth. We start by thoroughly cleaning and drying any tooth that is designated for sealing. Next, an etching solution is used to roughen the outer surfaces of the teeth so that the sealants can bond more effectively. The sealant will then be carefully painted on, sealing off any deep grooves and fissures that are present. When maintained properly, dental sealants should remain intact for up to ten years.
