Hearing from your dentist that you need a root canal is not a pleasant conversation. When you think about root canals, you probably automatically think about a painful procedure. At Thomas & Thomas Dental, we offer a root canal procedure we are proud of. In order to put your mind at ease and help you during your treatment, we present you 4 myths about root canals you can ignore.

Myth #1 You only need a root canal if you are experiencing tooth pain.

You may be surprised to hear you need a root canal if you aren’t in pain. Sometimes teeth no longer cause pain because they have actually died and are at risk of becoming infected. At Thomas & Thomas Dental, we have several tests, including temperature testing and percussion testing, that tell us when a tooth has died.

Myth #2 Root canal treatment is painful.

This may have been true decades ago, but like all other medical treatments, root canals have come a long way since then. With the use of modern technology, along with anesthetics and sedation techniques, having a root canal feels similar to receiving a filling. In fact, because a root canal relieves tooth pain associated with decay that has reached the root of a tooth and caused infection, it is often more painful NOT to get a root canal.

Myth #3 Root canals cause illness.

This myth has been around for a long time, and again is based on old information. There is no valid scientific evidence supporting any proof of this. Not only are root canals safe and effective, they eliminate bacteria from the infected roots of your teeth, improving both your oral health and your overall health. This means you’ll be LESS prone to illness after your procedure.

Myth #4 Tooth extraction is a good alternative to root canals

If keeping your natural teeth is an option, you should never chose to have them pulled instead. Having a tooth pulled puts you at an increased risk for bacteria getting in the wound. Going without a tooth or multiple teeth is simply not an option and bridges, implants, and other replacement alternatives require even more treatments, plus a higher cost.
